![]() At some point though, they will probably have an extensive library and someone will do a retrospective and suddenly everybody will get all googly-eyed about their stuff - as it was with the LucasArts point and click adventure games. And just like Laika rarely gets shoutouts in the common discourse for their progressive, transcultural, hand-crafted productions, Amanita also gets overlooked. They deserve tons of praise, but the discourse of video game analysis/critique resembles that of film production. Or without overselling the game to people who just don't like point-and-click adventure games? "Hand-drawn" makes you think of sketchy indie games or art games, so how do you describe the significance of having a hand-drawn walkthrough as part of the game, so that the player's desire to look up puzzle solutions becomes part of the ludonarrative, without referring to esoteric concepts like "ludonarrative" (which can be even more of a headache if people misunderstand those terms). You can't easily describe Machinarium because "atmospheric" is usually reserved for lush backdrops or horror games, "point-and-click" usually draws to mind meta-comedies or detective mysteries, and "cute robots" makes people think of XBLA shoot and loots. I think they're underrated because their aesthetic and ethos isn't coded into the mainstream memetic stream. I'm excited to get to the Samorost series at some point. As a musician and fan of Trip-Hop/Bossa Nova/Atmospheric video game music, that soundtrack is freaking incredible. The aesthetic hits that Eastern bloc sweet spot of "depressed but adorable". Machinarium is one of my tops of all time, for sure.
